How to: Prada’s homemade curls

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion trends / Hair trends

A hint of nostalgia churned with a surprising twist of modernity was the theme for Prada’s spring 2012 collection. While the knife-pleated chiffon skirts rang the 1950s doorbell, the quirky prints brought back quirkiness from the sixties.

This Milan show struck a playful and affirmative chord via the clothes, and the hair and make-up further enhanced its ladylike elegance.
On this runway, even the hair reverted back to a little girl’s age with the neat side parting, tucked hair behind the ear (to show off the studded earrings, of course) and soft curls at the back.

The Redken hair team worked with Miuccia Prada to create a hairstyle that would compliment the fashion without outdoing it.

They share with us a step-by-step how to guide after the break. If you’d like to make sure that you don’t miss any of the other looks in this year’s hair trends guide, you can subscribe to our newsletter or RSS feed.

Risque style: the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it edition

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion pictures / Paris fashion week / Street style

Yesterday we asked if society is ready for (or at least trending towards) street style that verges on nudity. And the answer seems to be in the affirmative. For the most part the comments left across Fashionising.com and our Facebook page were positive, with the few detractors taking anything but a puritanical approach – instead opting for an argument that tended towards the notion that more sensuality is to be found in a look that hints, as opposed to outright reveals.

While yesterday’s example was an interpretation of the see through fashion trend exactly as you’d see it on the runway, today’s is far subtler. While the sheer blouse is still revealing, its red and purple hues give it a pink tonality, and therefore a “blink and you’ll miss it” sensuality.

Alexander McQueen blue suede boots

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Shoes / Women’s shoes

These babies give the famous line don’t step on my blue suede shoes a whole new level of significance. It’s not just because their 14cm heel would make doing the twist a particularly towering feat, nor because their midnight blue suede makes the most stunning departure from black… But because, with the uncompromising attitude and tough independence these boots would give you, anyone treading on your toes had better watch out.

I might harp on alot about finding a balance between edgy and classic, statement and staple – but with these Alexander McQueen ankle boots I doubt anything of that explanation is required. Picture, thousand words, you get the gist.

Marloes Horst brings the cliche Christmas lingerie

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog

I’m normally wont to hate the cliche lingerie that raises its ugly head whenever there’s a celebration to be had. You know the kind. They’re all of the horny Halloween and “oh, hasn’t Mrs. Clause been a naughty girl this year” variety. Today will prove the exception to that avoidance rule, however.

As our American readers today sit down to celebrate Thanksgiving, Swiss retailer Manor have released their 2011 Christmas lingerie look book. Naturally the pairing of Christmas and lingerie means that it’s a look book that leads with Saint Nicholas themed nice-little-nothings. Thankfully it has more breadth to it than cliche Christmas iconography.

Alexander McQueen’s McQ gets store & catwalk show

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion industry / London fashion week / Topical fashion discussions

Such was his talent that, despite his untimely passing, the legacy of designer Lee Alexander McQueen continues to both live on and be felt. While much attention continues to be paid to the Alexander McQueen label now produced under the creative directorship of Sarah Burton, far less is heard about the younger McQ line. All that is set to change in 2012, however.

As of next year, McQ will not only have its first standalone shop, it will also host its first catwalk at London fashion week.

Olivia Palermo and a style lesson in brown

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion pictures / Street style

Brown is not an easy colour to wear. It’s the sartorial equivalent of foggy day in London sans the potentially romantic connotations. It’s not the colour’s fault, of course – it’s us. We’re genetically predisposed to loathe the colour. Go to a job interview wearing a brown suit and the odds are the job won’t be yours, despite the MBA from Oxbridge. Go on a date wearing it and the luckiest you’ll get is if your companion for the evening offers to go Dutch. Yet if there was ever a time that you could not only wear brown but easily rock it, it’s now.

With 70s fashion well and truly back in for now and 2012, brown has never stood such a chance of positively setting itself apart in the sartorial stakes. Admittedly however, that has more to do with the garments being woven in the colour, and far less to do with any growing appreciation we’re all feeling for the shade itself.

Case in point, these recent street snaps of Olivia Palermo. Take away the flared jeans and the look becomes a whole lot less interesting.
